Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque is the largest mosque in Sichuan province and one of the most famous mosques in Southwest China. Huangcheng means royal city in Chinese. It was named Huangcheng Mosque because the mosque is located near the royal city of a regional dynasty in the local history of Sichuan.
Huangcheng Mosque was originally built in the 16th century. Its first repair began in 1858. Huangcheng mosque was heavily damaged during a war in 1917. Although Huangcheng Mosque was rebuilt right after the war, its size was reduced due to financial constraint. Originally Huangcheng Mosque covered an area of more than 6,600 meter persegi, while it only took up about 5,000 square meters after the reconstruction in 1917. Huangcheng Mosque stands at its current site since November 1998.
Huangcheng Mosque was constructed with the combination of Chinese and Arabic architectural styles. The existing mosque consists of a screen wall, two gates, a library and a prayer hall. The screen wall is opposite to the gate of the mosque and there is a street in between. A tablet with the name of the mosque on it is hung on the first gate. On the second gate, there is a tablet with four Chinese characters Kai Tian Gu Jiao (the most ancient religion) hung, which was made during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The prayer hall was recently rebuilt.
The Islamic Association of Sichuan Province is located inside Huangcheng Mosque.
