Your adventure begins with a convenient pickup from your Kunming hotel at around 9:00 AM. Relax in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle as you enjoy the scenic 2-hour drive to Dongchuan (approx. 150 km). Upon arriving in Dongchuan, explore Shuipingzi, a breathtaking landscape characterized by endless layers of rice terraces that stretch as far as the eye can see. In spring, capture the picturesque irrigation scenes of the paddy fields, while autumn offers the opportunity to photograph the golden hues of the harvest. Discover the revered Thousand-Year-Old Divine Tree, considered sacred by locals. As the day winds down, witness a breathtaking sunset at Luoxiagou (Sunset Valley), where you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas of villages and farmlands nestled amidst the vibrant red earth. Your final stop, Luoshiwan (Snail Bay), is another ideal spot to witness the sunset. The circular terraces surrounding the low hills create a unique snail-like appearance, making it a photographer’s delight.

Jour 2 Red Land, Transfer to Kunming

Get up early to capture the breathtaking sunrise at Damakan, the best site to see a sunrise. Continue your exploration at Jinxiu Garden (Beautiful Garden) , a vast expanse of rolling red hills. Afterward, head to Qicaipo (Seven Color Slope), where you can photograph the vibrant hues of Dongchuan’s red earth. Visit Yuepuao (Musical Notation Concave) and Wafang Liangzi (Tiled House Bridge) to capture panoramic views of Yuepuao and the surrounding village. Along the way back to Kunming, take the opportunity to photograph the picturesque and peaceful village of Beihe, nestled against a backdrop of red fields. Photographers can capture vibrant red fields right after ploughing and before the crops start growing. Potato flowers bloom in the summer, and golden wheat adorns the red fields. With the mix of different crop colors, red soil, and blue sky, it’s one of the best times to photograph these strikingly red fields.

September to November
Autumn offers another captivating opportunity to photograph the red fields. Some fields may be prepared for new crops, while others are adorned with expansive fields of highland barley and wheat. Yunnan’s distinctive white cole flowers add a touch of color to the landscape, making autumn a must-see season for photographers.
