Explore Tianluokeng Tulou cluster
Tianluokeng features a unique cluster of five tulous, with four circular ones surrounding a central square tulou, creating a harmonious architectural blend with the natural landscape. This distinctive arrangement has earned it the nickname “four dishes and one soup,” reminiscent of a typical Chinese family dinner layout. The central square tulou, known as the “Buyun Building” or “Reaching the Clouds Building,” is the oldest, dibina pada 1796. It stands three storeys high, with each storey containing 26 rooms, four staircases, and a corridor encircling the rooms. Although the Buyun Building was destroyed by bandits in 1936, it was rebuilt in 1953 according to the original design. The Hechang Building, a three-storey round tulou, was constructed shortly after. The three-storey circular Zhenyang Building followed in 1930, and the Ruiyun Building was added in 1936. The final addition, the Wenchang Building, was completed in 1966. Despite being a popular tourist destination, these five tulous maintain a rustic charm, with locals often seen drying tea, rice, and vegetables, and curing meats in the sun.
Discover Yuchang Building
Nestled amidst a small village and rice paddies, Yuchang Building is one of China’s oldest known tulous. Constructed in 1308 during the Yuan dynasty by the Liu family clan, it has remained remarkably well-preserved. Standing five stories tall, Yuchang Building is also among the tallest tulous in China. It is nicknamed the “zigzag building” due to its vertical wooden posts, which zigzag left and right instead of being straight and perpendicular—a result of a measurement error during construction. The outer ring of Yuchang Building has a diameter of 36 meters and features five stories, each with 50 rooms, totaling 270 rooms. Unique to this tulou, each of the 25 kitchens on the ground floor at the back half of the circle has a private water well beside its stove, making it the only tulou in Fujian with such a convenient water supply.
Wander through Taxia Village
The ancient Hakka village of Taxia, tucked away in the lush green mountains, is one of the oldest and most spectacular villages in China. The village is split by a river, which flows through the heart of the village and is lined by over 20 traditional Tulou. The village was established in 1426 by the Zhang family but most of the remaining buildings were constructed during the 18th century, with the oldest, Fuxing Building, having been built in 1631. Stilted wooden houses are also littered along the riverbanks of Taxia and add to the idyllic pastoral scenery. The village’s main attraction is the Zhang Family’s Ancestral Hall, which is located near a pond and flanked by 20 stone flagpoles. This shrine to the Zhang’s ancestors was built over 400 years ago and is one of the most well-preserved of its kind in China. There are more than 300 households currently living at Taxia Village.
