In 138 MÖ, Zhang Qian was dispatched by Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty to the Western Regions to seek military alliance. Skirted the Taklamakan desert via the northern route, passed the Pamir, then reached Ferghana, Zhang Qian returned via the southern route in 125 MÖ. In 119 MÖ, Zhang Qian set off on his second trip to the Western Regions which took him to Dunhuang, Loulan, Kucha, then the capital of Wu-sun kingdom in the Ili River. His missions to the west led to the formalization of trade, especially the silk trade, between China and Persia, resulting in the opening up of the Silk Road.
