Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road

Introducing Nanjing Road
The 3.4-mile-long Nanjing Road starts at the Bund in the east and it is the main shopping street of Shanghai and one of the busiest shopping streets in the world. As a result of the Opium War (1839-1842), Shanghai was forced to open to the West as a port. Importing large quantities of foreign goods, Nanjing Road became the earliest shopping street in Shanghai. Over time, Nanjing Road has been restructured, undergoing significant change. For shopping convenience, its eastern end has an all-weather pedestrian arcade. Today over 600 businesses on Nanjing road offer countless famous brands, superior quality, and new fashions. KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and other world-famous food vendors line both sides of the street. Upscale stores include Tiffany, Mont Blanc, and Dunhill.

What to expect at Nanjing Road

Shanghai Nanjing Road includes Nanjing East Road and Nanjing West Road.

Nanjing East Road is the eastern stretch of Nanjing Road which extends for 1,599 meters from Zhongshan East First Road in the east to Tibet Middle Road in the west. The section to the west of Henan Middle Road is widely known as Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, which sets an exemplary model for Asia’s shopping scene. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is positioned for the middle-end and high-end brands and is visited by both the locals and visitors alike. The “Big Four” are can’t-misses: the Shanghai No. 1 Department Store, Yong An Company, Shanghai Fashion Company, and the Shanghai First Food Chain Development Company. The well-established Shanghai No. 1 Department Store stands right where Tibet Middle and Nanjing East Road converge. In its previous incarnation as Daxin Company before 1949, the department store was the most illustrious building on Nanjing East Road. Although today Shanghai No. 1 Department Store is no longer a symbol of chic and trends, it’s still paradigmatic of Shanghai’s commercial culture.

It’s quite an experience to cruise through the 1200-meter Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street paved with colored bricks and stones, with pedestrian traffic flowing irresistibly and sightseeing trains trundling through small stalls and boutique shops. Nanjing East Road is one of the best places where one can savor up Shanghai’s signature modern metropolitan style, with the rickshaws, incense shops, and classic cigarette ads being a thing of past.

Stroll eastwards from Henan Road to Shanghai’s most celebrated attraction: The Bund. You feel you are no longer in the 21st century and are transported back in time; you feel you landed in Charles Dickens’ London seen only in photos. Narrow streets, tall buildings, gray walls, high ceilings, pointed roofs – everything has a story to tell. In the glow of the setting sun, the Bund exudes the unique charms of the 30’s and 40’s of the last century.

Nanjing West Road is the western stretch of Nanjing Road touted as China’s Top Commercial Road. It’s on Nanjing West Road that world’s big-name luxury goods jostle for attention like Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Hermes, Tiffany, Prada, Dior, and the likes. Zhong An Famous Fashion Gallery is home to more than 50 brands specializing in watches, jewelry, and accessories, and the Mataiheng brings shoppers many of the world’s top clothing and bag brands. More world-renowned brands keep coming. Incessantly pushing the envelop of luxury shopping, 2000-meter-long Nanjing West Road is the perfect place for those looking to blow a lot of dough.
